Vegan Soft Serve at Green Vegetarian in San Antonio

As a parent, I try not to bribe my kid with food or use food as a reward. One reason for this is that it puts too much value on a certain type of food (usually sweets or candy) over real food. However, I am not a complete ogre and we certainly do enjoy our sweet treats around here. By limiting them (and being limited somewhat to availability – vegan treats aren’t always available on every corner), they remain in the “treat” category rather than “staple food” like in the S.A.D (Standard American Diet).
We were so excited when we heard about Green Vegetarian getting vegan soft serve – while I grew up on ice cream cones and other unhealthy things, Kyri has been vegan since birth and so this was something she had not experienced. We made the trip downtown this summer (we live in the ‘burbs and everything seems to be a 30 minute drive…) for her first ice cream cone, along with a vegan corn dog for lunch.
I’ve never seen a kid eat a cone so slow! She told me she wanted to really enjoy it, it was the cutest thing ever. Her first cone was Vanilla, and she loved it. Green has one soft serve machine and their ice cream flavors change periodically. The first two times we have gone for ice cream, we have had Vanilla. This past week, we went after our homeschool class at San Antonio Botanical Garden, and we both had Strawberry cones – Mom’s favorite!. Kyri even got a small bowl of vegan chocolate sauce to dip her ice cream in.
The kids and I now have a special treat to look forward to, and in moments of desperation, I can even pull out the “ice cream cone reward” card with Kyri. Not my favorite parenting tool, but hey mom likes ice cream cones too, so on occasion I’ll make the exception.
If you are in San Antonio, I strongly recommend Green Vegetarian – 100% vegetarian and kosher. All their food is awesome and be sure to save room for an ice cream cone for dessert.

Nothing but syrup, and it was so delicious.
